A quick recipe guide for students in hostels to try and master

A student has many phases which are important in the course of life of a student be it matriculation, college life and events, or hostel living. The student hostel life is all about fun, adventures, experiences and learning. We enjoy this phase of life when we are together with friends and roommates in a number of ways, be it a movie or game night, crashing in a friend’s room to study for the nearing exams or just having a house party to clear the blues and have a fun time. And not less important than any other thing is the requirement of food. So students are on a lookout to make something quick, easy, tasty and enjoyable to make the most of everything and satisfy their midnight cravings.

Some of the recipes which can be made to satisfy such cravings are:-

1. Chilly Cheese Toast –

It’s a classic and standard street food to make. It’s a no timer and gets made without much ado. The main ingredients for making chili cheese toast are:-

  • Bread-2 slices
  • Cheese-2 cubes
  • Green chilly-2
  • Butter-2 tbsp.
  • Oregano-a little
  • Chilly flakes-a little
  • Garlic-2 pods
The method to make chili cheese toast is as follows – 
  • Butter the bread.
  • Add oregano, chilly flakes, green chilly, garlic on it and pop it in the oven for 5 minutes.
  • Serve it with tomato ketchup or mustard sauce.

2. Chocolate dipped bananas –

The ingredients required to make these delicious bananas are:-

  • Ripe bananas-2
  • Chocolate(dark or white)-1 slab
  • Peanuts or cashews or nuts of your choice-A little bit
The method to make these yummy chocolate dipped bananas are –
  • Peel and cut the banana into tiny cubes and insert a toothpick in each.
  • Place them on a tray and put in the freezer till frozen for about 3 hours.
  • Melt the chocolate, either dark or white one in a double boiler over simmering water over lowest heat while stirring frequently.
  • Now dip the cubed bananas in the chocolate coating it completely.
  • Now add in peanuts, cashews or any other nut of your choice on the bananas.
  • Roll the coated bananas on the nuts and add grated coconut though it is optional.
  • Serve immediately or wrap in plastic wrap and freeze for up to 2 weeks. You can alternately use any other fruit apart from bananas like strawberries or pineapple.

3. Maggi –

We all as students have been addicted to eating Maggi which has been the old, hot-favorite and obvious comfort food of us all in our hostel and student lives. Each of us have different preferences to make maggi. Some of us like it watery, some like it dry, some like it with fried veggies and ketchup and some with only ketchups. Some of the versions of making maggi are-

Cheesy-eggy Maggi – Prepare maggi in the regular way. Garnish with grated cheese and scrambled eggs and chopped cilantro.

Deep fried paneer Maggi -Prepare maggi in the regular way preferably in the dry style.  Then fry in oil, some garam masala, chat masala and add fried, cubed paneer to it. Garnish with chopped cilantro. Serve hot.

Maggi Bonda -Prepare maggi in the dry style. Add grated veggies like cabbage, carrots, capsicum and fry everything in hot garlicky oil. To make garlicky oil take some refined oil, heat it and add chopped garlic, ginger and green chilies to it. Let it get browned and then add the veggies and maggi to it. Fry for five minutes. Now take out and add besan to it. Mix it well and shallow or deep-fry it in oil. Take out on tissue paper and serve with ketchup or mayonnaise.

Maggi sandwich -To make Maggi sandwich grate and boil veggies like cabbage, capsicum, carrots, peas, potatoes. Then fry these for only five minutes in hot garlicky oil. You can add chopped onions too in the oil while frying other ingredients. Also add garam masala, paprika, Maggi masala, grated ginger and switch off the gas. Now mash everything and make patties out of the mixture. Shallow fry the patties in some oil. Now butter your breads and spread some mayo too on them. Now place a lettuce leaf, the above made patty, sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and close with the other bread slice. You can additionally add mustard sauce too. Now put it in a sandwich maker. Serve hot with your preferred chutney, mayo or ketchup of your choice.

Meaty Maggi – Prepare Maggi in the regular way preferably in the watery style. Prepare the non-veg part be it sausages, leftover chicken as you want to and mix them both. Serve hot.

4. French toast –

The ingredients required to make this yummy, no timer and easy recipe are:-
  • Bread-2
  • Eggs-3
  • Sugar-4 tbsp.
  • Cardamom or vanilla essence-1-2 drops
  • Refined Oil-4 tbsp.
  • Honey-To drizzle lastly
The method to make french toast is –
  • Take a bowl. Add eggs, sugar and essence to it. Mix well after beating the mixture for a while.
  • Take a slice of bread. For ease of eating cut it into triangles. Now dip the bread slice in the mixture.
  • Take a pan. Add oil to it. Add in the bread and fry on both sides till slightly browned and cooked. Do take care not to burn the slice at all. So cook on a small to medium flamed-heat.
  • Serve it with hot tea, coffee or chocolate. You can try it with rabdi too.

5. Egg fried rice

You may feel hunger pangs at odd hours of the night. And when you are equally lazy craving for something easy, tasty and cooked in a jiffy you can try this recipe made from leftover rice. To make this funky egg fried rice the ingredients required are:-

  • Leftover rice-2 cups
  • Eggs-2
  • Onion-1
  • Green chillies-3
  • Ginger-garlic paste-1 tsp
  • Salt-As required
  • Garam masala-1 tbsp
The method to make egg fried rice is as follows –
  • Chop the onion and green chilies finely.
  • Take a pan and add 2 tbsp. of oil in it.
  • Now add chopped onions, green chilies to it. Fry it for 2 minutes. Now add the ginger garlic paste. Fry it for a minute to let the rawness disappear.
  • Now add the beaten eggs. Keep the eggs beaten and mixed with slight salt and pepper powder. Mix everything well.
  • Next add the leftover rice and more salt if required and garam masala. Mix it all well. Fry for 2 more minutes. You can garnish with chopped cilantro. Serve hot.
